Locks of Love- One Breast Cancer Survivor’s Story of Amazing Grace WLMS 6th grade students in Mrs. Sharon Hubbard’s class were privileged to share an amazing act of courage and selflessness today, as she had her long blonde hair cut to donate to Locks of Love, a non-profit organization which makes wigs for cancer victims. Mrs. Hubbard is a Breast Cancer Survivor who is experiencing a reoccurrence of the disease, and her students have rallied behind her to support her as she begins chemotherapy this month. She hopes her hair will benefit a child with cancer. David Icard, from the Bold & Beautiful visited Mrs. Hubbard’s class and initiated a hair cutting ceremony as her students and family members looked on. “Mr. David” helped found our local Wig Bank, and has worked extensively with cancer patients in our area. Mrs. Hubbard’s husband and her sister took the first two cuts with the scissors. Several hair stylists from the Bold & Beautiful also helped Mrs. Hubbard prepare for chemotherapy by styling her hair into the new shorter style. She modeled both her sassy short style and her new glamorous wig for her students and family, to prepare them for when her hair begins to fall out from the side effects of her chemotherapy. Mrs. Hubbard, who could easily have chosen to remain private with this personal health crisis, has instead chosen to teach her students the larger and lasting life lessons of courage under extreme circumstances, the art of living selflessly, the value of family and friends to support you through tough times, and the grace to take whatever life throws at you and turn it into a positive influence on someone else’s life. Our students are lucky to have such a teacher in their midst. They may not remember all the parts of speech, or the capital of Denmark later in life, but they will not forget the extraordinary events of today, and the powerful example that Mrs. Hubbard set for them through sharing what could be a personal low and spinning it into a strong lesson in courage, hope, graceful living, and positive thinking. There is power in words, but actions can speak so much louder. We are lucky to have Mrs. Hubbard on our staff, teaching us all the valuable lessons of a life well lived. |
